Getting Ready for Our First Conformation Show
At the end of February, Cowboy and I will be stepping into the conformation ring for the very first time at the Superstition Kennel Club show. To be honest, I am nervous. I have never shown a dog before, so this will be brand new for both of us.
Conformation has always been something I have admired from the outside. The grooming, the presentation, the way handlers and dogs move together. It all looks so polished when you are watching from the sidelines. Living it feels much more intimidating. I know Cowboy and I will be learning as we go, but that is part of why I want to try. It is about growth, putting ourselves out there, and seeing what we are capable of together.
February has already been a big month for him. At the start of the month, Cowboy earned his ATT title (AKC Temperament Test). That moment made me really proud, because it showed off his steady mind and confidence in a completely different setting. Knowing he can handle new situations makes me feel a little more prepared for what the conformation ring might bring.
I am sure I will overthink every detail, from his grooming to how we move together, but I keep reminding myself that everyone has to start somewhere. We may not look perfect, but the goal is to learn, to show up, and to enjoy the experience. No matter what happens, Cowboy and I will come out of it with more knowledge and another step forward in our journey together.
